Is a dermatologist a medical doctor?
Yes. Dermatologists are specialist doctors and have to first obtain a medical degree prior to undertaking a rigorous 4-year specialist training program with the Australasian College of Dermatologists. The training program is very competitive and comprehensive. Dr Wain completed her medical degree at The University of Melbourne and has completed her specialist training in dermatology at leading Sydney hospitals.
What’s the difference between ‘skin cancer doctor’ and dermatologist?
Dermatologists are the only skin specialists in Australia. To become a qualified dermatologist, you must undergo a 4-year speciality training with the Australasian College of Dermatologists after obtaining a medical degree. You must then pass a demanding examination process to be certified as a dermatologist.
If you are unsure if the doctor you are seeing is a dermatologist, look for the letters of their qualification ‘FACD’ or ‘Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists’ following their name. The Australasian College of Dermatologists website also has a register of qualified dermatologists.
